When you stand in front of Asmild church, it may be hard to imagine that the place was once part of a four-winged monastery. Or, that later a manor house was erected at the site. Until the Reformation (1536) Asmildkloster (literal translation '''Asmildmonastery) '''was a nunnery and then fell to the crown, after which it was placed under royal fiefdom at Hald. The location near the narrowest point of Viborg lake meant, that it was from Asmildklosters lands a ferry service across the lake was establishe, later to be replaced by a bridge which now divides Viborg lake in two.
