In order to secure royal power, the King Erik Menved (1274-1319) build a fortress at Kalø in 1314.
Kalø remained in royal ownership until 1690, when Christian 5. sold the castle to Conrad Reventlow.
The manor has never been permanently inhabited by the owners, and no actual main building has therefore been built.
